When the sun goes down, the reef truly comes to life. The SDI Night & Limited Visibility course prepares you for the transition into the nocturnal world, where common dive sites are transformed into entirely new environments. You’ll learn to manage the unique challenges of low light and limited visibility with confidence and precision.
What You’ll Master

The Nocturnal Ecosystem: Learn why we dive at night and how to identify the fascinating shift in aquatic life.

Lighting Systems: An in-depth look at primary lights, backups, and personal dive beacons—including how to choose the right style for your environment.

Communication & Navigation: Specialized techniques for buddy contact, light signals, and navigating via bottom contours or compass in the dark.

Emergency Management: Procedures for handling disorientation, light failure, or a lost buddy situation.

Environmental Skills: Perfecting buoyancy control and surface signaling (marker lights and strobes) for night-specific entries and exits from boats or beaches.
Course Logistics

In-Water Training: You will complete two open water dives focused on light handling, communication, and navigation under the supervision of your instructor.

Prerequisites: SDI Open Water Scuba Diver (or equivalent).

Minimum Age: 18 (or 10 with parental consent).

Duration: Typically completed over one or two evenings.
Requirements & Deadlines

Registration: Sign up at least one week prior to the scheduled dives.

eLearning: Must be completed 3 days before the first night of class.

Gear: In addition to your standard kit, you are required to have at least one primary and one backup underwater light.
