The PADI Basic Freediver course is a subset of the PADI Freediver course. It's a great first step for developing solid freediving skills. You learn basic freediving principles and focus on practicing breathhold techniques in a pool or confined water site.

When you sign up for Basic Freedivier, the first thing we'll do is get you set up with the Freediver eLearning.  The eLearning interactive study tool gives you the background information you need to freedive safely and allows you to learn at your own pace. Our PADI Freediver Instructor will check on your progress and make sure you understand important freediving information.

To enroll in a PADI Basic Freediver course you must be at least 12 years old. You need adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health. No prior experience with snorkeling, skin diving or freediving is required.

You must sign up, in advance, with enough time to complete the eLearning materials prior to the first course date.  The course date you choose is the actual in person portion of the class.  Additionally, the medical and liability forms must be completed prior to the first in person session.

Once the eLearning is complete, the PADI Basic Freediver course consists of two sessions:

  • Classroom - You will refresh the fundamentals of freediving, physics and physiology, learn breathing techniques and stretching exercises, as well as freedive safety.
  • Confined water session - You will learn breathhold techniques as well as static and dynamic apnea, plus proper buddy procedures. Goal - static apnea of 90 seconds and dynamic apnea of 25 metres/80 feet.

For this course you will need to have the following equipment:

  • Mask and snorkel - preferrably a low volume freediving mask and freediving snorkel - but you may be able to use your regular mask and snorkel with training.
  • Full Foot fins - These can be scuba fins or Freediving long fins, but it's important that its a full foot fin and that they fit properly.
    • You may also want neoprene socks (3mm or 5mm) and/or fin keepers.
  • Weight belt - you will need to have your own weight belt for this class, a rubber/silicone freediving weight belt with a Marseilles buckle is recommended.
  • Wetsuit - Freediving wetsuits are the best option, 3mm or whatever you need for thermal protection, a scuba wetsuit will work and you can rent if you don't have your own.

You do not have to purchase your own weights, we will provide weight for the class so that you can figure out how much weight you need for freediving, and then you can purchase the correct amount you need after the course.

Minimum Age: 12 years old
